Ultimate guide to Halloween family fun during lockdown

With a possible October half term lockdown on the cards, it doesn’t have to spell the end of Halloween fun for the family.  Getting into the spirit of Halloween can be a great opportunity to get crafty together, enjoy activities and get gaming as part of a week-long celebration.

Get Spooky

Dress up your house with lots of DIY decorations to build excitement ahead of Halloween.  Hobbycraft has lots of easy craft ideas that start from as little £1 including gothic paper chains, colour your own skull sun catchers and lots of ghostly ceramics that can be painted.  Dressing the house, especially if on lockdown or self-isolating, adds a real thrill at a time when you most need it.  Just don’t forget the exterior to show off your handiwork with the neighbours.

Scary Movie

Get together on the sofa and cuddle up for a family-friendly scary movie to help get into the spirit of Halloween.  Is there anything better than the classic that is The Adams Family?! Nibble on toffee apples while sipping a mug of Whittard of Chelsea’s new limited edition Toffee Popcorn flavour White Hot Chocolate, a buttery sweet melt in the mouth delicious treat.

Pumpkin Parade!

The timing of Halloween this year means most children will be off school in the lead up to the weekend date allowing a whole week of crafting to get stuck in to!

One key activity during this time has to be pumpkin carving.  Check out Pinterest for lots of stencils and inspiration to design your pumpkin.  Remember pumpkins don’t have to be all scary faces and ghouls, try revamping your pumpkin and turning it into a pretty vase adorned with some beautiful autumnal flowers for a pretty, colourful spin on a traditional design.

Game Night

Keep kids entertained with the introduction of some new games. Older children (and adults!) will love brand new quick-play Hocus Pocus The Game where you have to work together to stop the evil Sanderson sisters from draining the life of Salem’s children. Featuring some of the best-loved quotes from the film, it’s a novel card-based game that encourages players to work together.

Another new game set to cause lots of laughs is Slimy Joe Game.  Ideal for younger children, it will test reflexes and speed with slime aplenty, a winning combination!

Frightful Delights

Create your own fun at home by hiding sweets and chocolates around the home for your children to find.  Think of unusual hiding spots and try to get creative with it!  Add in some Halloween music to enhance the atmosphere and you have a fun (and warm!) activity to enjoy.

This year, Iceland has a full range of easy to serve Halloween tasty treats meaning you can spend more time enjoying the night rather than slaving over a hot stove. For a sweet treat, our favourites are the Scarily Sweet White Chocolate Brain and Belgium Chocolate Gold Smashing Skull for a fun twist on a cheesecake and cake favourite. For the adults, there’s a range of food with a little extra spice to mix things up and have some fun. Keep an eye out for the Jalapeño Roulette Wheel!

Dress to Impress

Lastly, don’t discount the delight of dressing to impress.  We’ve all been there and done it with the 2020 staple accessory – a face mask – so it’s novel to change things up a bit!  While social distancing will prevent the traditional Halloween get-togethers, fancy dress can help to spread joy and excitement so take lots of photos to share with family or organise an online virtual Halloween party with a group of friends and include a fashion showcase.

Get the kids stuck into a project and together make your own dazzling masterpieces using up all those left over items in the arts and craft box.  Alternatively, if dressmaking isn’t your thing, hit the high street or browse online to pick up an outfit and accessories.  Our top picks that we have fallen a tiny bit in love with this Halloween include:

  • Poco Nido’s adorable pumpkin-themed mini shoes for tiny feet
  • Lazy Baby’s hilarious jail mate romper emblazoned with ‘Just done 9 months inside’
  • Mori’s cute Spooky Eye Sweatshirt
  • Stunning Milledeux pumpkin and ghost clips for an enchanting hair decoration
  • Etsy for lots of personalised family togs from the humorous slogans to the cryptic creations!

We’d love to see how you are celebrating Halloween this year so share your pictures with us over at Inspired Family’s Instagram page.
